We Named the Store Flawless. Here's What GIA Actually Means by That Word.

There's a word on our door, and there's a word at the very top of every GIA clarity scale, and they're the same word: Flawless.
So let's talk about what it actually means — because it does not mean what most people think it means, and the truth is a lot more interesting than the marketing.
Flawless is a grade, not a promise of perfection
GIA grades diamond clarity from Flawless down to I3. The top of that scale reads:
- FL — Flawless: no inclusions and no blemishes visible to a skilled grader at 10x magnification
- IF — Internally Flawless: no inclusions, but minor surface blemishes visible at 10x
Read that again and notice the fine print: visible at 10x magnification.
That's the whole standard. Not "nothing inside the stone." Not "molecularly perfect." Just: a trained gemologist, using 10x, looking in four directions, sees nothing.
This isn't a loophole. It's a deliberate, sensible line in the sand — and in the United States it's actually written into law. The FTC's Jewelry Guides make it deceptive to call a diamond "flawless" if it shows flaws, inclusions, clouds, or blemishes "when examined under a corrected magnifier at 10-power, with adequate illumination, by a person skilled in diamond grading."
Ten power. By a skilled person. That's the legal definition of the word on our sign.
So how does GIA actually do it — loupe or microscope?
Both. And the distinction between them is the single most misunderstood thing in diamond grading.
The microscope is for finding. The loupe standard is for deciding.
GIA graders use a binocular gemological microscope with darkfield illumination — a technique GIA itself brought to the trade back in 1938 — and they'll push to 20x, 30x, or higher to locate and identify what's inside a stone. That's how they tell a feather from a cloud from a pinpoint, and how they pin down the barely-there stuff at the VVS level.
But once they know what's there, the grade is determined at 10x. GIA is explicit about this: clarity, polish, and symmetry are finalized using a 10x loupe.
That's your answer to the question every customer eventually asks: if it's flawless, why can I see something under the jeweler's microscope? Because the microscope wasn't the standard. It never was.
Who actually assigns the grade
Not one person. That surprises people.
When a diamond arrives at GIA, every reference to its owner is removed. It goes into a sealed transparent case with a bar-coded internal number, and the client's identity is hidden even inside the grading software. Stones get routed randomly between stations so no grader can be assigned on purpose.
Then multiple gemologists grade it independently, entering their opinions without seeing anyone else's. A preliminary grader maps the inclusions onto a plot diagram and calls clarity, polish, and symmetry. More graders look. For bigger, higher-value, or disputed stones, senior staff gemologists come in and render their own independent opinions.
The grade is only finalized when there are enough agreeing opinions. No consensus, no grade.
That's why a GIA report carries the weight it does. It isn't one person's Tuesday afternoon.
Where the whole system came from
Before GIA, the trade was the Wild West. Clarity was described as "perfect," "loupe clean," or "piqué." Color came in competing systems — A, AA, AAA, "top Wesselton," "rarest white." A dealer in one city and a dealer in another could describe the same stone in completely different language and neither was lying.
- 1940s: GIA founder Robert M. Shipley coined the "4Cs" as a teaching mnemonic — color, clarity, cut, carat weight.
- 1953: Richard T. Liddicoat, with Lester Benson, Robert Crowningshield and others, built the actual scales: D-to-Z for color, Flawless-to-I3 for clarity. They took the trade's existing shorthand (VVS, VS, SI) and finally gave it fixed, agreed definitions.
- They deliberately started color at D, not A — because A, AA and AAA were already so abused in the market that the letter was useless.
- 1955: The first GIA Diamond Grading Reports went out. Almost by accident: students had started mailing their stones in to check their own grading, and it was easier for GIA to just grade them.
Seventy years later, that's still the language the entire world buys and sells diamonds in.
What about now — is a machine grading your diamond?
Partly, and this is worth knowing.
GIA has automated much of its color and cut grading, and since a 2020 partnership with IBM it has been building an AI system for the hardest one: clarity. As of 2025 GIA's CEO confirmed that AI-based grading is running in all of its labs, with the expectation it will eventually handle the majority of stones.
But humans are still in the loop. Graders review and validate the results, and treatment detection and important or complex stones still go to experienced gemologists. Your report is not a robot's unsupervised opinion — it's a machine and a room full of gemologists agreeing.
(One more 2025 change worth flagging if you're shopping lab-grown: as of October 1, 2025, GIA no longer puts D-Z color and FL-I3 clarity grades on lab-grown diamonds at all. They now get a "premium" or "standard" descriptor instead. GIA's reasoning is that over 95% of lab-grown stones land in such a narrow quality band that the natural-diamond scale stopped being meaningful.)
The part that actually affects how your ring looks
Here's what all of this comes down to on a hand, in real light.
FL and IF are indistinguishable to the naked eye. The only difference between them is a bit of surface graining or a polish line — features so minor that cutters often leave them alone rather than lose carat weight polishing them off. Nobody at your dinner table can tell.
What does affect what you see is where an inclusion sits and what color it is. A dark crystal parked under the table interrupts light on its way in and out, and you lose sparkle right in the center of the stone. A few small white feathers tucked near the girdle, hidden by a prong, do essentially nothing — and can save you real money.
That's the conversation worth having. Not the letter on the paper. The stone.
